GISBORNE PUBLIC LIBRARY

CULTURAL CONSULTANCY, ARCHITECTURE

Chow:Hill collaborated with the Gisborne District Council and Tohunga Derek Lardelli, cultural design director, Lardelli Arts, to carefully weave cultural narratives, local history and maanakitanga into this new place of learning. Examples of this cultural, artistic and architectural collaboration include the three Toki forming the gateway to the building, the Kaokao flooring articulation guiding visitors from the entry, and the Poutama expression framing the entry and service counters. The outcome resulted in open and vibrant spaces and functional flexibility allowing the facility to welcome community groups and after-hours events, enhancing its place in the community and sustainability long term.
